Status of Women Canada – Women’s Program

One of the ways Status of Women Canada advances gender equality in Canada is by providing funding to eligible organizations through the Women’s Program. Projects are selected via calls for proposals on specific themes, as well as through a continuous intake process that allows the Women’s Program to accept applications on an ongoing basis.

The Women’s Program provides funding for projects that address barriers to women’s participation and equality in Canadian society in three priority areas: ending violence against women and girls; improving the economic security of women and girls; and encouraging women and girls in leadership roles.

Calls for Proposals – Capacity-building Fund

The call for proposals entitled Capacity-building Fund invites women’s and Indigenous organizations serving women in Canada to apply for funding for projects to increase organizational capacity and help organizations work collectively to address gender equality issues. Funding will be exclusively awarded to projects that aim to increase the organizational capacity of equality-seeking women’s and Indigenous organizations. The fund, which responds to the Budget 2018 announcement of $100 million over five years, will help support a viable women’s movement across Canada. The total amount of funding requested for projects must not exceed $50,000 per year for a maximum of five years for organizations with a local scope, $150,000 per year for a maximum of five years for organizations with a provincial/territorial scope, and $200,000 per year for a maximum of five years for organizations with a national scope.

Funding from this call for proposal will help women’s organizations, and Indigenous organizations serving women, improve their organizational and sector capacity at the national, provincial/territorial, and local levels. Potential capacity needs could include but are not limited to:

  • human resources management;
  • board governance;
  • results-based management;
  • partnership development, collaboration, and networking;
  • strategic planning;
  • succession planning;
  • diversification of funding sources;
  • advocacy; and
  • sector coalitions and partnerships.

Over time, women’s organizations, and Indigenous organizations serving women, will have strengthened their capacity helping to ensure a viable women’s movement in Canada.
