(Kansas City, MO) – Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II (D-MO), Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Monetary Policy, today hosted a roundtable discussion with Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome H. Powell and a group of local business and community leaders. The roundtable was designed to gather input from regional stakeholders as to how current monetary policy is affecting businesses in the Greater Kansas City Area, in addition to actions that can be taken to stimulate greater economic growth and support the Federal Reserve’s legislative mandate of achieving maximum employment and stable prices.
“I want to extend my sincere gratitude to Chairman Powell for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit Kansas City and hear straight from the local business community,â€ said Congressman Cleaver. “We had a very frank discussion about what is going right with the American economy and steps we can take to ensure the longest economic expansion in U.S. history continues unabated. As we head back to Washington, we will continue our work to foster an economic environment that allows businesses, workers, and consumers to thrive.â€
Earlier in the day, Congressman Cleaver hosted a separate roundtable with several urban and rural Community Development Financial Institutions, as well as community and civic leaders, at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. This discussion also focused on a variety of economic issues related to community development, local banking, employment, consumer good prices, and financial sector challenges.
As the Federal Reserve seeks input from across the country, today was Kansas City’s opportunity to be heard. It is important to take into consideration the economic conditions of our region to ensure we accomplish the goals set out by Congress of achieving maximum employment and price stability across the nation. Wednesday’s session moved us one step closer to improving the economic wellbeing of our communities.
