ST. LOUIS, MO – August 24, 2026 (USPress.News) St. Louis Media, LLC is preparing to launch the National Press Network, or NPN, a nationwide initiative designed to provide independent journalists with professional press credentials, publishing opportunities, training, digital publishing resources, and a pathway for qualifying original reporting to reach a broader network of news publications.
The National Press Network is being developed as more than a press credential program. Its planned model combines journalist identification and verification with an active digital news platform where members can submit original reporting, receive individual author attribution, and build a public portfolio of their published work.
NPN will operate at NationalPressNetwork.org and will be operated by St. Louis Media, LLC, the independent Missouri-based digital media company that owns and operates STL.News and other digital publishing properties.
St. Louis Media LLC said the objective is to build a nationwide network of independent reporters who have the tools and infrastructure needed to report news professionally while developing their own careers and independent media businesses.
NPN to Give Independent Journalists a Place to Publish
One of the central features planned for National Press Network is an active news publication where independent journalists can submit their original reporting.
Membership itself will not guarantee publication. Articles will be required to meet NPN editorial standards before being accepted.
Approved articles will identify the journalist by name, and contributors will have individual author profiles on NationalPressNetwork.org. Readers will be able to select an author’s name and view other articles that journalist has published through NPN.
The system is intended to give independent reporters something beyond a plastic press credential: a verifiable record of their journalistic work.
A journalist’s NPN profile may eventually serve as both a professional biography and reporting portfolio, allowing editors, sources, public information officers, event organizers and prospective clients to review the journalist’s published work.
The initiative builds on a direction STL.News publicly outlined earlier this month. In its 2026 State of Publication report, STL.News said it had been developing an Independent Reporter Network intended to give independent journalists and contributors opportunities to report on communities and subjects they understand.
STL.News said the concept reflects the reality that important stories regularly occur in communities that may not attract reporters from large national news organizations.
Selected Reporting Could Reach a Larger Network
National Press Network is also being designed as an entry point into a larger digital publishing and distribution system.
Original NPN reporting that satisfies additional editorial, sourcing and verification requirements may be considered for distribution through participating St. Louis Media publications.
The distinction is important.
Purchasing an NPN membership will not purchase editorial coverage or guarantee placement on STL.News or another St. Louis Media publication. Instead, independent journalists will have an opportunity to demonstrate their reporting abilities through their NPN work.
Stronger original reporting can then be considered for wider distribution when it is appropriate for the audiences served by other network publications.
The journalist’s authorship will remain an important part of that model. NPN intends to help independent reporters build recognizable professional identities rather than publish their reporting anonymously.
St. Louis Media already operates a network model in which individual publications can serve different geographic, industry and subject audiences while sharing publishing technology, experience and infrastructure. STL.News describes itself as one of the network’s primary general-news publications.
Press Credentials Will Be Part of a Larger System
Professional press credentials are planned as an NPN membership benefit, but St. Louis Media does not intend for the credential itself to define the organization.
NPN credentials are expected to include individual identification and verification features connecting the credential holder with the network.
The credential will identify the bearer as affiliated with National Press Network. It will not provide law enforcement authority, special parking privileges, or automatic access to private property, restricted areas, or events requiring separate accreditation.
The larger objective is to connect a journalist’s professional identification with actual published journalism.
An NPN reporter could therefore present a credential while also having an online author profile containing the person’s biography, status and published reporting.
NPN Plans Training and Professional Resources
Training will be another component of the network.
St. Louis Media is developing an independent media handbook that addresses modern journalism rather than focusing solely on traditional reporting methods.
Planned subjects include finding and developing stories, interviewing, source verification, public records, breaking-news coverage, news photography, smartphone reporting, article writing, digital publishing, blogs, search visibility, social media, artificial intelligence, copyright and journalism ethics.
The resources are also expected to address the business realities independent journalists face.
NPN intends to provide educational material about freelance journalism, photography, website publishing, advertising, public relations consulting, press release writing and distribution, media services and other potential sources of independent income.
Journalism and paid public relations services will be treated as separate activities. Commercial relationships will not entitle a client to independent NPN editorial coverage.
Helping Journalists Build Independent News Sites
National Press Network also plans to support members who want to establish their own local or niche digital news publications.
St. Louis Media intends to offer optional website development, configuration, and managed hosting services separately from NPN membership.
A journalist could establish an independently branded local news website, publish original community reporting, develop an audience and sell advertising directly to local businesses.
The reporter could continue contributing appropriate original journalism to NPN while operating the independent publication.
That creates the possibility of a distributed network in which independent journalists own or operate local publications while remaining connected through National Press Network.
Selected reporting from those publications could potentially be considered for NPN and wider network distribution after editorial review.
The model could be particularly useful in communities where traditional local-news resources have declined or where specialized subjects receive limited regular coverage.
NPN Members Could Develop Media Businesses
The network is also being developed around the idea that independent journalism needs a sustainable economic model.
Members could potentially earn income through freelance reporting, photography, advertising on their own publications, communications consulting, website content, newsletters, and public relations services.
Press release distribution is expected to become another professional resource available to members, allowing independent media professionals to provide distribution services to their own business clients.
NPN also plans to develop professional field resources that could include standardized business cards, reporter apparel, microphone branding, vehicle identification and other reporting equipment.
Optional products and services would be separate from the core principle governing editorial publication: paying for membership or services will not guarantee that an article is published.
Building a Nationwide Independent Reporter Network
St. Louis Media’s longer-term objective is to establish NPN correspondents in communities across the United States.
A reporter in Missouri might specialize in local government. Another in Arizona could cover courts and public safety. A correspondent in Florida might concentrate on business, while reporters elsewhere could focus on politics, restaurants, technology, education or other subjects.
Together, those journalists could provide National Press Network with reporting from communities that a centralized newsroom could not economically cover on its own.
The model also gives journalists a chance to build individual reputations. Rather than simply carrying an NPN card, contributors can build a searchable body of published work attached to their names.
NPN status is expected to distinguish membership from demonstrated publishing experience, allowing contributors to build a track record through accepted work.
St. Louis Media Expands Independent Publishing Strategy
National Press Network represents the latest expansion of St. Louis Media’s independent digital publishing strategy.
STL.News was founded in February 2016 and has developed more than a decade of experience in digital publishing, news aggregation, content management, search, syndication and online distribution. STL.News is independently owned and operated by St. Louis Media, LLC.
The company has increasingly emphasized editorial verification, transparency and clear distinctions between independent journalism, submitted material and commercial publishing services.
National Press Network is intended to extend that infrastructure to independent journalists who may not have access to a traditional newsroom.
The concept is straightforward: give independent reporters professional identification, education, publishing infrastructure and an opportunity to build a public record of their work.
For those who want to go further, NPN plans to provide resources for developing their own independent publications and media businesses.
The best reporting can then potentially travel farther through a larger publishing network.
St. Louis Media expects to announce additional details about National Press Network membership, credentials, contributor requirements, editorial standards, and launch availability as the new platform develops.
National Press Network is scheduled to launch soon at NationalPressNetwork.org.
